Campuses
The Faculty of Medicine occupies two primary sites. The Okofia Campus at Nnewi houses the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and provides the setting for pre-clinical instruction. The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) which is currently at its interim site, Nnewi, and relocating to a permanent site at Akammili-Nnewi, serves as the clinical training base for all students in Years 4 to 6.
Lecture and Teaching Facilities
The College auditorium at the Okofia Campus accommodates up to 1,000 persons. The Uzodike Auditorium at the Teaching Hospital site holds up to 500 students and provides a modern venue for clinical seminars, formal lectures and academic events. In addition, three large lecture halls each with a capacity of 150 students are located at the Teaching Hospital site, supplemented by departmental seminar rooms within clinical buildings and ward areas. Multimedia projection, public address systems and video facilities are available throughout.
Basic Medical Sciences Laboratories
The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences maintains well-equipped laboratories for Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology and Gross Anatomy. The new Physiology laboratory features multiple work benches for at least 150 students, and the Biochemistry laboratory offers equivalent capacity. The Anatomy dissecting room provides individual cadaveric dissection tables shared by groups of eight students. The Histology laboratory accommodates at least 120 students, with each student assigned a personal microscope. A Molecular Research Laboratory is also established at the Okofia Campus, having been optimised in cooperation with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in May 2022.
Pathology and Pharmacology Laboratories
Fully established and well-furnished laboratories serve the pathology sciences: Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Chemical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Immunology as well as Pharmacology. Collectively, these laboratories accommodate up to 150 students and have recently been upgraded with new equipment and structural improvements.
Library and Electronic Resources
The Medical Library at the Okofia Campus and the College Library at the Teaching Hospital premises together hold over 40,000 volumes, with regular acquisitions including the most current editions of postgraduate textbooks across all 20 departments, donated by the Faculty’s international alumni network. Electronic library services, including HINARI, RESEARCH FOR LIFE and additional internet subscriptions, provide access to a vast collection of current biomedical journals and databases. Inter-library loan services further augment available resources.
Student Accommodation
The College provides hostel accommodation at the Okofia Campus, where a substantial proportion of female medical students reside: two students per room. Male students are accommodated in supervised privately-owned hostels adjacent to the campus. A Central Bank of Nigeria-sponsored hostel complex under construction at the Okofia Campus will, upon completion, provide comprehensive residential facilities for all College of Health Sciences students. Two clinical student hostels at the Teaching Hospital site accommodate final-year students, with additional hostel capacity being developed at the permanent Teaching Hospital site. A student hostel at Neni accommodates students on rural Community Medicine postings.
Transport
The Faculty provides dedicated student transport, including two buses for medical student use. Additional vehicles are drawn from the College pool for students on departmental postings.
