About the Department

The Department of Surgery is one of the principal clinical departments within the Faculty of Medicine, delivering training in the Fourth Professional (4th MBBS) Examination and the Fifth Professional (Final MBBS) Examination. The Department encompasses general and specialist surgical disciplines and is affiliated with the Department of Anaesthesiology through the combined Board of Surgery.

In addition to undergraduate training, the Department of Surgery hosts the newly created Dentistry unit approved by the University Senate in 2021 and is actively involved in the development of dental training at the University.

Research and Postgraduate Education

Academic staff of the Department contribute to surgical research with publications in both national and international peer-reviewed journals. The Department participates in the postgraduate residency training programme in Surgery, accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons.
