The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi
Overview
NAUTH is the principal clinical teaching and training partner of the Faculty of Medicine. Operating as an independent federal teaching hospital, NAUTH provides the clinical infrastructure, specialist consultant staff and patient care environment within which undergraduate MBBS students complete their clinical training. The hospital is currently located at an interim site in Nnewi and is in the process of relocating to a purpose-built permanent site at Akammili, Nnewi, which will substantially increase clinical capacity and training resources.
Training Environment
NAUTH provides teaching facilities for 20 clinical departments, including three large lecture halls (each for 150 students), the modern Uzodike Auditorium (capacity 500), seminar rooms within clinical buildings, and fully equipped pathology and pharmacology teaching laboratories. The Hospital recently completed a significant upgrade of laboratory equipment and facilities, funded in part through the office of the Chief Medical Director, further strengthening the standard of practical clinical training.
Student Facilities at NAUTH
Two student hostels are located within the Teaching Hospital Old site, accommodating fifth- and final-year medical students. More are being erected in the NAUTH permanent Site at Akamili-Nnewi. An on-site medical library and electronic resource centre from NAU Awka Main Campus supplemented by alumni-funded internet access and e-library subscriptions provide immediate access to clinical references and biomedical databases for students on clinical posting.
